Student Rules and Regulations

Conformance to the following rules and regulations is essential to the efficient operation of the Morris County Public Safety Training Academy. All students will familiarize themselves with their content and be held responsible for compliance.


INJURIES
Any accident occurring on the Academy's premises MUST be reported to the administrative office immediately and the proper accident report forms completed. Injured students may not return to class without a written clearance from the attending physician.

DRESS CODE
Classroom attire for Fire Fighter 1 and Junior Firefighting will be Academy issued shirt, dark blue pants (no jeans), black shoes or sneakers, no hats. All other students will wear appropriate attire for course. Tank tops, sleeveless shirts or shorts are NOT to be worn. Nor any item deemed offensive should be worn. Refer to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for drill attire.

SMOKING
Smoking in the interior of the Academy is prohibited. Smoking beyond the "No Smoking" signs on the fire grounds is prohibited.

PARKING
The parking area immediately adjacent to the building has been designated as staff parking. The space is shared by the Office of Emergency Management, the Sheriff's Communication Center, the Academy's Instructional staff and short term visitor parking. Students are to park in the general parking area only.

GENERAL
  1. The use of intoxicants, as well as the illegal use of any drug or substance, is strictly prohibited on Academy property. Reporting to the Academy after having used either will be construed as being used during training hours and will result in automatic dismissal.

  2. Students may not receive personal phone calls on Academy phones except in emergency situations. Public phones are available.

  3. Students are not to stand or sit with their feet against the walls, on tables or chairs, or mark, alter or damage any Academy property.

  4. Do not, in any way, interfere with any classes that might be in session. Proper decorum should be exercised at all times. Any act or behavior pattern deemed prejudicial to the good order and discipline of the class, i.e. sleeping during class, will result in dismissal from the Academy.

  5. The administrative office should not be entered unless required to do so on official business.

  6. Students are expected to clean up after themselves. Soda cans, coffee cups, newspapers, etc., are to be placed in the proper receptacles provided for regular trash or recyclables.

  7. All students should take note of the EXIT signs located throughout the building. In the event of an emergency, quickly and calmly exit the building at the location closest to your activity.

  8. The emergency doors, located in each classroom of the new wing, are to be used for emergency evacuation only.

  9. All messages that are not considered emergencies will be placed on the message center located outside the administrative office. Emergency messages will be delivered immediately.

  10. Pagers, beepers and cellular phones should be turned off or switched to silent alert while classes are in session.

ATTENDANCE
  1. Classes will begin promptly at 7:30PM week nights and 8:00AM weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays unless otherwise specified. Students are to arrive for class on time prepared to take notes. LATE ARRIVALS WILL REPORT TO SENIOR INSTRUCTOR OR THE OPERATION OFFICER.

  2. Attendance at ALL sessions is mandatory in order to successfully complete any fire course. If a session is missed, the student must contact the Fire Training Coordinator to schedule a makeup class. Students who are absent for more than 20% of the course will have to repeat the entire course. All makeups must be authorized by the Fire Training Coordinator and no "walk-ins" will be allowed.

  3. Final examinations, practical or written, will not be taken by any student until all sessions have been completed.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
  1. An average score of 70% is necessary to successfully complete a course.

  2. Students who have a reading disability (i.e., comprehension, perception, illiteracy) should notify the Fire Training Coordinator of the disability at the start of the course. Oral testing procedures are available upon request.

BREAKS
  1. Break times are set at the discretion of the instructor. Food and/or beverages are prohibited in the auditorium, lecture rooms, classrooms or corridors. Coffee breaks are to be taken in the lunchrooms unless prior permission has been granted for in-room breaks.

STUDENT PERSONAL SAFETY
  1. Female Students - Cosmetics are not permitted during live fire training evolutions.

  2. All Students
    • SCBA - Any student participating in live fire or S.C.B.A. training must have completed the OSHA Respiratory exam and be certified medically fit to wear S.C.B.A.

    • HAIR - Any student participating in live fire or S.C.B.A. training, who has hair that extends below his or her collar, must wear a hair net or arrange hair so it does not fall below the collar. Hair enclosed in an OSHA approved hood is acceptable.

    • JEWELRY - Jewelry, other than a wedding band, will not be worn for live burn activities.
      EXCEPTIONS: MEDIC ALERT BRACELETS AND NECKLACES ARE EXEMPT.

    • MEDICATION - Any student taking medication, which has side effects that may affect their participation in class activities, is to notify Academy staff and their sending agency prior to participation.

  3. The wearing of boots and turnout gear in the interior of the Academy is not permitted. A walk through with gear is permitted from the front to rear of main building in area of the range entrance.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)
  1. All firefighters personal protective equipment must comply with PEOSHA and NFPA standards.

  2. Students with any facial hair that interferes with the face to facepiece seal will not be permitted to participate in evolutions requiring self contained breathing apparatus (S.C.B.A.).

  3. Long pants and sleeved shirts are required to be worn under turn out gear. Shorts or sleeveless shirts will not be permitted.
